EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
Minutes for
January 9, 2006
Cleveland High School Alumni Meeting Room
The meeting was called to order by vice president, Dave Voll, at 11:30 AM.
Present: Ted Amato, Odis Avritt, Gary Bishop, Julie Branford, Paul Cook, Pat Dannen, Kari Freeman, Nadine Livingston, Dennis Maloney, Gladys Michels, Jean Miller, Bryce Rickson, Dave Voll
There will be an “All School Celebration” held at the Oregon Convention Center this month. There will also be a “Bridging the Gap” meeting at the high school during January. The IB Theater will be presenting small plays this week from Thursday through Saturday. The Choir “Dessert-a-thon” will be held on Friday, January 20, beginning at 6:30 PM. The CHS Foundation presents the 3rd Annual Wine Tasting event Saturday, January 28, from 6 to 9 PM. Contact the school for additional information.
Budget/Finance—No report
PTA—Kari Freeman reported that the January PTA meeting will be held on January 19 at 6:30 PM. Following that meeting, there will be a “Start Asking” presentation which helps provide tools to parents concerning drug awareness. There will be panel of speakers for a “Question and Answer” session.
Scholarship—Jean Miller and Julie Branford reported that their fund-raising ideas will include a raffle at the spring luncheon. There was an ongoing discussion about the alumni picnic to be held at Oaks Park some time in July, 2006. Their next meeting will be January 11, 2006.
Membership—Dave Voll reported that the 2004 non-renewals will be dropped. 2005 non-renewals will be carried on the roster through 2006. Dennis Maloney and Dave Voll will be working on the database. The May newsletter will emphasize the importance of renewals. A letter will be sent to Golf Tournament and 90th Celebration participates who currently are not members. Contents of the letter are being finalized.
Communications—No report
Boosters—Dave Voll reported that at the half-time of the Boys’ Basketball game on February 17, 2006, the Cleveland High School Hall of Fame inductees will be presented. The following people will be inducted: Keith Forman ’59, Dwight Umbarger ’53, Margie Hoth Lyons ’57, and Mark Gronvold ’77. Merit awards will be presented to Ken Poorman ’57 and Dwight Jaynes ’65. Preceding the game at 6 PM, there will be a reception in the main hall to honor these people.
Foundation—No report
Golf—Ted Amato reported that the golf auction will be held on August 16, 2006 at Oaks Park. The tournament will be held at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course at 2 p.m. on August 17, 2006.
Board Development—Dave Voll reported that nominees for a new slate of officers are being formulated for the Association. They will begin their office on July 1, 2006. We continue to look for nominations for the CCHSAA Board positions where terms are expiring. Julie Branford has nominated Melinda King for consideration.
5. Topics of Discussion and Updates:
Alumni Calendar: Jean Miller reported that we have 64 souvenir calendars available for sale. Calendars will be distributed to CHS staff today. A note will be attached to explain the functions of the CCHSAA.
Spring Luncheon: Jean Miller reported that the luncheon will be held on May 25, 2006 at the Monarch Hotel. At this time, Dave Voll will present the President’s Achievement Award.
Alumni Newspaper: Dave Voll reported that the articles for the spring edition are being completed and turned in. A decision will be made at a later date as to what inserts will be included in this edition of the newspaper.
Golf Challenge: Odis Avritt reported that the Franklin alumni will be the host for the Franklin-Cleveland Alumni Golf Tournament. It will be held during the week prior to the September 29th Cleveland/Franklin football game. Members of the Cleveland Alumni team must be Association members.
Cleveland Community Field Project: Odis Avritt reported that the momentum is shifting to more positive contacts with foundations and individuals. A large donation was made by a prominent CHS alumnus. The Autzen Foundation contributed $25,000 toward the project. The Association’s first mailing was successful to a variety of classes. Cleveland High School alumni athletes will be targeted specifically with an informational mailing.
90th Year Celebration DVDs: Dennis Maloney reported that he has 65 DVDs remaining for sale
6. Old Business:
Outstanding Alumni Recognition: Julie Bradford handed out a draft of the possible criteria to be used in selecting candidates for this recognition. The recognition will be made at the annual luncheon in the future.
Alumni School Picnic: Gladys Michels reported that discussion is ongoing.

Board of Directors’ Meeting will be Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at 7 p.m. at Cleveland High School Library.
