EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
Minutes for
May 8, 2006
Cleveland High School Alumni Meeting Room
The meeting was called to order by president, Dave Voll, at 11:30 AM.
Present: Odis Avritt, Gary Bishop, Pat Dannen, Kari Freeman, Joe Gatto, Nadine Livingston, Roy Love, Gladys Michels, Jean Miller, Bryce Rickson, Dave Voll, Jan Watt, Paul Cook
Honors have been coming our way. The A Choir directed by Steve Peter was selected as co-champions of the State Choir Competition. Robert Schlichting was selected as State Science Teacher of the Year. Holly Vanderschaaf was selected by the Portland Public School Board to serve as the city-wide student representative on the Board for the coming year.
There will be a “Run-A-Thon” held on May 11, 2006 from 8-10 p.m. at the track. Runners will be getting pledges to help raise money for the new track facility. There will be a carnival atmosphere with lots of other activities in and around the area.
Planning and preparation have begun for the CHS Hall of Fame and trophy cases in the gym area.
Budget/Finance—No report
Membership—Dave Voll reported that 50 new memberships have been received from notices that were sent out to the participants of the 90th Celebration Saturday night activity and to the non-member participants of the 2005 Golf Tournament. Non-renewals are still a concern.
Scholarship—Jean Miller reported that final preparations are being made for the luncheon on May 25, 2006. The four scholarship winners will be introduced. The All-School Picnic is scheduled for July 13, 2007 to be held at the Oaks Amusement Park.
Foundation—Jan Watt reported that the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Foundation will match up to $150,000 for the Field Project. Money donated by individuals and groups ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 will be matched by the Foundation. This offer will be good until July 4, 2006. The committees are notifying individuals and groups about the matching offer.
PTA—Kari Freeman reported that the PTA has given money raised at the 2005 Auction to the school for a variety of purposes. Among those are tables and chairs for the cafeteria, a sound system for the auditorium, and graphing calculator material for the Math Department.
Boosters—Dave Voll reported that the Booster Club Garage Sale will be on June 24 and 25, 2006 at the residence of Gale Wasserberger. It is located 7405 SE Reed College Place. More information will be available at a later date.
Communications—Bryce Rickson reported that information is being entered and updated on the website.
Board Development—No report.
Golf Tournament—No report
5. Topics of Discussion and Updates:
Cleveland Community Field Project: Odis Avritt reported again that the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Foundation has offered to match donations. See “Foundation Committee” report.
The Cleveland/Franklin Golf Challenge: Odis Avritt reported that the committee is continuing to finalize information for the tournament.
Spring Luncheon: Jean Miller reported that committees are finalizing the plans for the spring luncheon.
Election of Officers: Dave Voll reported that we will be voting on the election of officers at the May 17 Board of Directors meeting.
Alumni Newspaper: Jan Watt reported that it is uncertain as to whether the high school journalism classes will be able to prepare the newspaper for publication in the future. Discussion was held regarding this concern. Dave Voll made a motion to solicit bids from two publishers for a four-page and an eight-page paper to be printed and mailed. The motion was seconded and passed. Dave will follow up on this item.

6. Old Business:
Letterhead for the Association: Odis Avritt indicated that ideas are being solicited to be used for an Association letterhead.
Defibrillator for the High School: Dave Voll reported that this needs further discussion.
Special Events Chairperson: Discussion was held and it was decided that additional discussion needs to be held by the Executive Committee.
On Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at 9 a.m. refreshments will be served in honor of “Volunteer Appreciation Day.” It will be held in Room 221 at the high school.
The Association will be gathering information for articles about noteworthy personnel and programs at the high school.
Executive Committee Meeting will be Monday, June 12, 2006 at 11:30 a.m. at Cleveland High School Alumni Room.
Board of Directors’ Meeting will be Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at 7 p.m. at Cleveland High School Library.
