EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
Minutes for
December 11, 2006
Cleveland High School Alumni Meeting Room
The meeting was called to order by president, Odis Avritt, at 11:30 AM.
Present: Ted Amato, Odis Avritt, Gary Bishop, Julie Branford, Paul Cook, Pat Dannen, Kari Freeman, Joe Gatto, Karen Genzer, Bill Love, Dennis Maloney, Gladys Michels, Jean Miller, Marty Schwan, Dave Voll, Jan Watt
Principal’s Report: Paul Cook reported that the CHS choir performed at their yearly holiday event at Fred Meyer’s Corporate office last week. This year they gave the choir $1,000. The CHS Jazz Band took 1st place in the Jazz Festival at Skyview High School. This is the first time since 1979 that the Jazz band has won a competition.
Four of the CHS football players were nominated for the National Football Hall of Fame Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The criteria for selection include scholarship, athletic ability and community service. Two of the four were selected by the Board. One was nominated for the Backfield Scholar Athlete and the other was nominated for the Lineman Scholar Athlete.
The second computer lab up and running. Currently, we are working on establishing the third.
With the recent decision by the Portland Public School Board to have a one-year freeze on transfers to Lincoln, CHS will now be the only IB school in Portland accepting transfers.
Holiday concerts are taking place this week. Friday, December 15th, is the last day of school before the holiday. School will resume on Tuesday, January 2nd.
Budget/Finance—No report
Scholarship—Jean Miller and Karen Genzer reported that notification had been received from the Oregon Community Foundation regarding a federal law (HR 4) passed in August 2006. It brings into question the composition of the selection committee which interviews scholarship nominees. On December 13th at 10:30 a.m., Randall Choy (representative of the OCF) will meet with the CHS Scholarship Committee regarding the new law. The meeting will be held at Eastmoreland Golf Course.
Membership—Dave Voll and Marty Schwan reported that they are concerned about the annual renewals which need to be renewed by January 1, 2007. Some discussion is being held about incentives for memberships and the different levels of membership. Dennis Maloney will bring some ideas for both of these areas to the next Membership Committee meeting. Marty Schwan will be compiling class lists for the classes of 48, 49, 51, 56, 57, and 61 for renewals. The committee is in the process of updating the membership letter.
Communications—Dave Voll reported that the Hall of Fame nomination form is on the website.
Golf Tournament—No report
Board Development—Dave Voll reported that he is looking at the 70’s and 80’s graduating classes for individuals who would like to be one the Board of Directors.
Group Reports:
· PTA—Kari Freeman reported that the PTA has donated $1,900 to the library for portable data video projectors. They also donated $1,200 for a washer and dryer for the Athletic Department. On January 11, 2007, CHS families are invited to the auditorium for a PowerPoint presentation on the use of multi-media. On February 1, 2007, there will be another drug/alcohol awareness program for parents and students. A variety of speakers will be involved. The Foundation is inquiring about a corporate sponsor. The annual auction will be held on March 3, 2007 and the theme will be “Licensed to Spend—007”. This year the paddle bids will be targeted toward the Foundation and technology. Kari also indicated that there is a Latin class being formed which will meet outside the regular school day.
· Boosters—Bill Love and Dave Voll reported that currently the Booster Club will be selling trees at the football field. It will be from 3-8 p.m. on Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. There will be a recycling activity also to be held at the same location on Saturday, January 6, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on Sunday, January 7, from noon to 4 p.m. On January 19 and 20, the Don York Wrestling Tournament will be held. Some discussion was held regarding the Association’s involvement with the breakfast prior to the tournament. A motion was made and seconded that the Association would not be involved with this activity. The motion passed. Dave Voll will find six adult volunteers to assist in the weigh-ins for 4 p.m. on Friday and 7 a.m. on Saturday. It was mentioned that the wrestling cheerleaders are raising funds for their uniforms.
· Foundation—Jan Watt indicated that on January 20, 2007, there will be a Crab/Wine/Brats/Beer event at the Hip Chicks Do Wine and Hair of the Dog Tavern. Both establishments are located in the vicinity of 28th and Holgate. It will be at 6:30 p.m. and the cost will be $30 per ticket. This is a fundraiser for the Foundation.
4. Topics of Discussion and Updates:
Cleveland Community Field Project: Odis Avritt reported that many discussions are being held by all of the major parties involved in the completion of the project.
Spring Luncheon: Karen Genzer reported that discussion continues regarding the format of the luncheon for next spring.
2007 Alumni Picnic: Jean Miller reported that the committee met on November 15 to discuss the food items for the picnic.
Alumni Newspaper: Jan Watt reported that the articles for the spring edition are due on March 1, 2007. If articles are being submitted to Dave Voll, they should be in by February 20, 2007 so that they can be prepared for publication. Some discussion was held about disclosing the sources of Scholarship Fund monies in the newsletter. It was suggested that this could be displayed visually in a bar graph. No decisions were made at this time.
Gym Lobby: Joe Gatto reported that there is ongoing discussion regarding this topic.
CHS POPS (Parents of Performing Students): Odis Avritt reported that the CHS POPS would like to work with the Association on a fundraiser. Discussion is continuing. The groups to perform would be the CHS Jazz Band and Clevelandaires. Ken Paulson, CHS Band Director, has numerous contacts in the professional music world. He might be instrumental in bringing in a well-known performer. This group would like to use their portion of the funds raised to help renovate the auditorium.

5. Old Business:
The Distinguished Alumni Award: Julie Branford reported that the idea for this award would be to recognize CHS outstanding alumni from a variety of fields. It is hoped that this would generate more interest in belonging to the Association. There will be an article in the spring newsletter. It is also in the planning stages to put the nomination form on the CCHSAA website.
