Academically, students did well last year on all of the CIM Assessments. The Writing, Reading and Math scores all increased and are above the District and State Average. The Science score increased and is above the District average. Student scores on the SAT were in the top four in the city. There are currently two students who are National Merit semifinalists.
There are over 300 students participating in fall sports. The lights on the field have been wired in and were used at the first soccer game—no generator needed.
Budget/Finance—None
Membership—Dave Voll reported that there are 35 new members who have joined in conjunction with the 90th Celebration. We are dropping 60+ members for non-renewal. A future discussion will be held regarding lifetime memberships.
Communications—Bryce Rickson indicated that it is easier for him to put information on the website if it is sent to him as an attachment to an e-mail. Matthew Fitchen and Dennis Maloney will be assisting Bryce on maintaining the CCHSAA website—chsalum.com. Bryce stated that he is going to explore the possibility of linking our website to the PIL website—pilathletics.com
Scholarship—Jean Miller reported that the Scholarship Committee meets on the second Wednesday morning of each month at Eastmoreland Golf Course. Mel Krause reminded the group that we awarded four $2,000 scholarships in June. Thirty-three scholarships have been awarded over a ten-year period of time. Julie Branford will be the new chairperson of this committee.
Golf—Ted Amato reported that the Oaks Park Auction night went very well. We are gathering expenses that need to be paid. The Golf Tournament Committee will be meeting at a future date. Dennis Maloney has volunteered to be on the Golf Committee.
PTA—Kari Freeman reported that the PTA will be meeting at the high school on October 20, 2005 at 7:30 PM. It is possible that there will be a time change for future meetings.
Board Development—None
Boosters—Dave Voll reported that Dave Long is a new member on the Cleveland High School Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Dave reported that there was a good turnout of parents for all of the fall sports at the meeting on September 12, 2005. From the proceeds of the annual golf tournament, it had previously been decided that $10,000 would be given to the Booster Club. A motion was made and seconded to give Paul Cook, building principal, $6,800 at this time. He will be responsible to allocate funds as he sees fit. The motion passed. With this amount of $6,800 being paid along with the $3,264 that was given to the Booster Club in the winter of 2005 toward the completion of the Concession Stand in the gym, the $10,000 allocated will have been dispersed.
Cleveland High School Foundation—Roy Love brought up the possibility of having a member of the Cleveland Foundation be a liaison to the CCHSAA Board of Directors. This will be pursued with the Foundation in the future.
5. Topics of Discussion and Updates:
Field Renovation Project: Odis Avritt reported that Morry Arntson has contacted Linda Walker who is in charge of St Mary’s fund raising. She met with the committee on September 14, 2005. She emphasized that we need to get the Oregon Foundation’s data book which could provide a variety of resources in fund raising. There will be a committee formed to put in motion a process for “in-kind” donations.
Alumni Calendar: Jean Miller reported that they have 500 calendars to sell for $5 each. This will give the Association a profit of $2 per calendar. A second printing is possible. There will be a coupon in the fall “Alumni News” so that people can order them by mail. They will be for sale at the 90th Year Celebration. We will also be placing the purchasing process for the calendar on the website.
Fall Edition of the “Alumni News”: Dave Voll reported that the deadline for articles to be sent to Jan Watt is October 1, 2005.
90th Year Celebration: Ted Amato indicated that they sent out 8300 invitations in July. One hundred ten alumni have officially signed up for the festivities. Additional alumni have expressed an interest in attending the football game and the open house only. Ads have been placed in the Living Section of “The Oregonian” and will be placed in the Sports Section. Letters will be sent to parents of current students and an article will be placed in the school paper. An e-mail will be sent to all Association members where e-mails are available. A banner is being prepared to hang in the school and at the reception. Posters will be distributed to local businesses.
