BOARD DIRECTORS MEETING
Minutes for
May 17, 2006

The meeting was called to order by president, Dave Voll, at 7 PM.
Present: Ted Amato, Gary Bishop, Julie Branford, Kari Freeman, Joe Gatto, Melinda King, Mel Krause, Nadine Livingston, Bill Love, Roy Love, Dennis Maloney, Jay Maxwell, Gladys Michels, Jean Miller, Pete Norman, Marty Schwan, Dick Springer, Dave Voll, Jean Wegener
be approved for the coming year (until June 30, 2007). In addition, the following Board of Directors’ terms were extended for a three-year term until June 30, 2009. They are Ted Amato, Terry Bittner, Gladys Michels, Dan Potter, Dave Voll, Julie Branford, Karl Koch, Dennis Maloney, Jean Wegener and Susan Haggard. This motion was seconded and passed. Dave Voll will notify Jeannine Lester, Matt Fitchen and Kate Jacobs that they will be removed from the Board of Directors because they do not meet the criteria of the bylaws.
Honors have been coming our way. The A Choir directed by Steve Peter was selected as co-champions of the State Choir Competition. Robert Schlichting was selected as State Science Teacher of the Year. Holly Vanderschaaf was selected by the Portland Public School Board to serve as the city-wide student representative on the Board for the coming year.
A “Run-A-Thon” was held on May 11, 2006 from 8-10 p.m. at the high school track. Runners collected approximately $5,000 in pledges. This amount will be matched by the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Foundation
Planning and preparation have begun for the CHS Hall of Fame and trophy cases in the gym area.
Budget/Finance—None
Membership—Dave Voll reported that we are going to be asking for a volunteer from each class to serve on a subcommittee. Dave Voll and Marty Schwan will serve as co-chairs of this committee. The goal of this committee would be for making contacts with individuals from each individual’s class. Two areas that will be looked at would be participants from the 90th Celebration and the CCHSAA Golf Tournament. A report from this subcommittee will be presented at the Executive Committee meeting in June.
Membership information will be given to classes who are holding reunions in 2006. Hopefully, some memberships might arise from that contact.
Current members who have not renewed their membership since 2004 will be dropped from the membership roll as of June 15, 2006. Members who have not renewed for 2005 will be sent a reminder.
Scholarship—Julie Branford gave a reminder about the luncheon on May 25, 2006 where the four scholarship winners will be presented.
Julie announced that she had to resign from the Scholarship Committee. She will find a successor for her position.
Communications—No report
Golf— Ted Amato reminded the group that this year’s auction for the Golf Tournament will be held on August 16 at Oaks Amusement Park. The Golf Tournament will be at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club on the August 17.
Board Development—None
PTA—Kari Freeman reported that the PTA has given money raised at the 2005 Auction to the school for a variety of purposes. Among those are tables and chairs for the cafeteria, a sound system for the gym, and an area for material storage for the Math Department. They also have awarded scholarships to four students.
Boosters—Dave Voll and Bill Love reported that the rummage sale will be held on June 24 and 25, 2006 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The address is 7405 SE Reed College Place. Donations can be dropped off on June 23, 2006 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the same address. A contact for this event is Leigh Nunez at 503-232-8898.
6. Topics of Discussion and Updates:
Spring Luncheon: Jean Miller reported that the Spring Luncheon is on May 25, 2006. The raffle proceeds will go toward funding scholarships. The raffle tickets will sell for 3 for $5. The purchaser can select the raffle item(s) toward which the tickets will go.
Field Renovation Project: Roy Love reported that the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Foundation will match up to $150,000 for donations ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 until July 4, 2006. Many groups and businesses are being contacted. There are some local business people (Cleveland alumni) who are becoming involved in this project.
Fall Edition of the “Alumni News”: Dave Voll reported that it is uncertain as to whether the high school journalism classes will be able to prepare the newspaper for publication in the future. Future discussion will be held regarding this concern.
Annual All-School Picnic: Nadine Livingston reported that this picnic will be held on Friday, July 20, 2007 at the Oaks Amusement Park.
Cleveland-Franklin Golf Challenge: Dennis Maloney reported that a “Ryder Cup style” trophy has been ordered for the tournament. Cleveland participants must belong to the Association.
CCHSAA Recognition Awards: Julie Branford reported that this award will be given in 2007. There will be an article regarding these awards in the fall newsletter. It will be for a “distinguished alumnus” in their chosen field. The nominating criteria are being finalized. At the end of December, the selection committee will choose the honoree(s).
Trophy Case: No report
Defibrillator: Dave Voll reported that ongoing discussions are being held.
CCHSAA Letterhead: Dave Voll reported that suggestions are being solicited to develop a letterhead and logo for the Association.

Joe Gatto thanked Dave Voll for his efforts on behalf of the Association in serving as its president. Odis Avritt will take over as president on July 1, 2006.
Executive Committee Meeting will be Monday, June 12, 2006 at 11:30 a.m. at Cleveland High School Alumni Room.
Board of Directors’ Meeting will be Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at 7 p.m. at Cleveland High School Library.
