BOARD DIRECTORS MEETING

Minutes for
January 16, 2008

The meeting was called to order by president, Dennis Maloney, at 7 PM.

 

Present: Ted Amato, Gary Bishop, Julie Branford, Neshia Cameron, Rose Chapman, Pat Dannen, Kari Freeman, Karen Genzer, Melinda King, Karl Koch, Nadine Livingston, Roy Love, Dennis Maloney, Jean Miller, Pete Norman, Bryce Rickson, Marty Schwan, Tom Strader, Virginia VanLom, Dave Voll.

 

  1. Minutes from the September 19, 2007 meeting were approved as written.

 

  1. Treasurer’s Report:  We have 669 annual members and 311 lifetime members for a total membership of 980.  Current assets for the Association are $20,629.01.  The Scholarship Fund balance is $4,190.86.  The treasurer just moved $5,000 was taken from the Scholarship Fund to the Oregon Community Foundation Fund.  Actual assets are $11,438.15.  The Oregon Community Foundation balance as of September 30, 2007 is $183,147.44.

 

Budget/Finance—No report.

 

  1. Principal’s Report:  Dennis Maloney gave the principal’s report.  He reported that the student transfer process for the 2008-2009 school year begins in February.  On Saturday, February 2, there will be a “Celebrating Schools” event at the Expo Center and on Thursday, February 7, the CHS “Bridging the Gap” night will be held.    Cleveland students will begin the forecasting process in mid-February.  All winter sports teams are competing well and are having success.  The PIL Hall of Fame Committee has donated $5,000 toward the matching funds for the field in the name of Mel Krause.

 

    1. PTA—Kari Freeman reported that on Thursday, January 17, that the Multnomah County library staff will be present at the PTA meeting to educate parents on the nuances of “Space Book” and “My Space.”  The CHS librarian will be discussing with parents the “Homework Hotline” usage.  Also, the PTA Auction “Hula Moola” will be held ono March 15, 2008.

 

    1. Boosters—Dave Voll reported that the CHS Booster Club is still getting organized.

  1. Standing Committee Reports:

 

Membership—Dave Voll reported that invoices for 2008 renewals were sent out this week.  In February, a bulk mailing with be sent to a selection of the alumni.

 

Scholarship— Karen Genzer and Jean Miller reported that the CHS note cards are still available.  Karen reported that the Committee is discussing with the Eastmoreland Garage Sale Committee the possibility of the Association selling items at the sale.  The Committee is also updating the questions to be used to interview scholarship nominees.  The interviewers have been selected.

 

Communications—Bryce Rickson reported that there is still more discussion as to how to get articles to him to put on the website.  Pictures are still an issue due to the software that is available for use.  There is discussion with students in one of the computer classes about providing assistance on the website.

 

Golf— Ted Amato reported that the money donated by the CCHSAA Golf Committee to CHS was used to purchase needed items for Girls’ Soccer, Basketball and Golf and Boys’ Basketball, Wrestling and Track.

 

Board Development—Dave Voll stated that we currently have openings on the Board of Directors.  We are looking for alumni interested in filling those positions.  Directors whose terms expire in 2008 will be contacted to ascertain if they are interested in extending for three more years.  Officers will also be contacted regarding their interest in continuing in their office.  If Board Members have any nominees for officers of the Association, please contact Dave Voll.

 

5.       Topics of Discussion and Updates:

 

Spring Luncheon:  Jean Miller reported that the Committee is still discussing the format for the luncheon.

 

Alumni News:  Dennis Maloney requested that all articles for the spring newsletter be sent to him.    

 

Annual All-School Picnic:  Neshia Cameron reported that the Committee is in the early stages of planning for the Picnic on July 12, 2008 at Oaks Amusement Park.

 

CCHSAA Distinguished Alumni Awards:  Julie Branford reported that her committee consists of Ted Amato and Pete Norman.  Julie presented a proposal developed by her Committee.  The “Distinguished Alums Award” is designed to recognize an individual alumnus in their professional field.  This award will be known as “The Order of the Feather.”  Options available for a reception honoring the award winner(s) are the Multnomah Athletic Club, Oswego Lake Country Club and Waverly Country Club.  It is possible that some of the net proceeds from this reception could be targeted toward the Scholarship Fund and the Association treasury.  The selection committee will bring the names of the nominees to be voted on by the full Board of Directors.  Non-alums can submit names of individuals for the award.  A motion was made and seconded to adopt the proposal prepared by the Committee and presented to the Board of Directors at this meeting.  The motion passed.  The Committee will have copies of the proposal available upon request.

 

Field Renovation ProjectRoy Love reported that we are close to meeting the matching fund requirement stipulated by a CHS alumnus.  The PIL Hall of Fame Committee has donated $5,000 toward the matching funds for the field in the name of Mel Krause.

Oregon Cultural Trust:  Jean Miller presented information about the Association getting involved in this state sponsored program.  More information will be coming.

 

Alumni ID Cards:  Dennis Maloney brought up the idea of issuing alumni ID cards.  There will be more discussion on this idea at another meeting. 

 

  1. Next Meeting:

 

Executive Committee Meeting will be Monday, February 11, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. at Cleveland High School Alumni Room.

 

Board of Directors’ Meeting will be Wednesday, May 15, 2008 at 7 p.m. at Cleveland High School Library.
