Nominations are due by March 31. Please send them to Julie Branford by email: julie.branford@gmail.com or to her mailing address: 6200 SW Sheridan Street, Portland, 97225. Nominations should include the person’s name, graduating year, and a brief statement of the nominee’s accomplishments, outlining why the person should receive the award.
A panel, consisting of Pete Norman, Ted Amato, Jan Watt, and Julie, will review the nominations and make the presentation of the award at the spring Scholarship Luncheon.
There is a limit of 3 awards per year, and only one award in a category each year.
The first-ever fundraiser for the Scholarship Fund netted approximately $800.00 for the Scholarship Fund. The 23 baskets, all worth from $40-50 were well received and will become a part of future luncheons. Many thanks to Rose Lauener Chapman (1949) and Helen Buckhorn Jones (1951) for their hard work as co-chairs, and to their committee who solicited donations.

Dave Voll (1957), outgoing president of CCHSAA, welcomed 141 alumni and guests to the annual event May 25 at the Monarch Hotel. WE were glad to see that more Cleveland alumni attended this year.
Don Mitchell (1940), one of the original Ironmen and who donated the first $5000.00 to start the Scholarship Fund gave the history of the Ironmen and regaled the audience by reading some excerpts from old Ledgers. Don, one of the staunchest supporters of the Fund, also contributed four Ledgers for sale that he found in a Portland bookstore.
Paul Cook, Principle of CHS, gave an update of the problems facing most schools in Portland and also told of some of the positive activities. Dick White, retired Cleveland Counselor and a very important part of the Scholarship program, announced three scholarship and Hannah Sanford who won the Communications Scholarship attended. Justin Ralls, winner of the Arts scholarship was ill and unable to attend. Don Mitchell then introduced the Ironman award winner, Sherry Cole. All received $2,000 Scholarships.
The 1950 Rose Festival Queen, Dorothy Anderle Cole, and the 1951 Princess, Jackie Alfson Hennessy, were introduced.
Dave Voll then introduced the new officers for 2006-2007. Odis Avritt (1963) will serve as CCHSAA President, Dennis Maloney (1960) is Vice President. Pat Dannen (1956) will continue as Treasurer and Gary Bishop (1957) will retain his title of Secretary.
Dave then announced the following awards: The Alumni President’s award went to Ted Amato (1963) for his many contributions to the activities of CCHSAA. The Alumni President’s Lifetime Award was presented to Terry Wiesner (1963) for his contributions to CHS as a Student, parent and for his activities on behalf of CCHSAA.
The oldest graduate present was Evelyn Alexander (1927). She said she expects to see us next year.
Jan Watt was thanked for her continuing efforts in volunteering to serve as Editor of the Alumni News. The paper could not be done without her!
Nadine LaFountaine Livingston (1951) and Darlene Norgard VandenBiesen (1950), who served as Co-Chairs of the 90th Reunion Open House at CHS, told the audience that because of the success of that event and the interest engendered, and all school picnic is planned for Friday July 13, 2007 at Oaks Park. So mark your calendars!
Dorothy Praegner and Sam Tosti who have co-chaired the luncheon since it began were thanked along with all the volunteers who serve so faithfully year after year. We couldn’t do it without all of you.
Odis Avritt asked everyone present to call their classmates and urge them to join CCHSAA and get involved. He thanked Dave Voll for his leadership as both President and Membership chair man these past two year, a daunting task. Dave will continue as Membership chairman.
